What is teak?

Teak is commonly referred to as the ‘King of Woods’ and is sourced from the Tectona grandis tree. Teak is a dense, close-grained type of hardwood, golden in colour with a smooth texture. As it’s high in natural oils and rubber, it is incredibly strong and durable, with high resistance to extreme weather conditions and rotting.

What do the different teak grades mean?

When shopping for teak garden furniture you may come across a reference to ‘grades’. This simply determines the quality of the teak you are buying. There are three grades of teak available, however, those looking for top-quality teak should always opt for Grade A. All of the teak furniture at Luxus is manufactured from Grade A teak, which is knot free with a dense close curved grain. Grade A teak has an even colour and doesn't come with a risk of splitting or shrinking over time.

• Grade A — comes from the mature heartwood and contains the highest natural oil content, offering superior durability. Even in colour, close-grained and knot free.
• Grade B — taken from the outer heartwood, with a lower oil concentration.
• Grade C — sapwood, lighter in colour and significantly less durable.

How to measure for teak garden furniture

Due to the durable nature of teak, it’s no surprise that it’s the top choice for those looking to invest in quality garden furniture. Before choosing the teak furniture you want for your space, it is important to take the time to properly measure both the furniture and the area that it’s going into. All of our teak products are listed with the depth, height and width of each piece, so it’s key to make a note of these measurements.

Using a roll of masking tape, map out the furniture in your garden. This will give a much more accurate representation of the size than simply noting the square footage of your space. Once you have your teak garden furniture marked out, take the time to walk around and assess whether the setup works for you.

• Upon delivery, check that the joints are well-fitted, close-fitting and neat.
• Does the teak feel solid? Inferior teak designs may compromise on thinner legs and arms.

What to watch out for

Teak furniture is costly, so it is worth knowing the pitfalls before you commit. These are the issues we see most often.

1. Poor quality. Buying from non-reputable companies can lead to lower quality furniture, often made with cheaper materials. It may not be as durable and may not last as long as a higher quality piece.
2. Misleading advertising. Some companies make false claims about the quality, design or materials used, which leads to disappointment when the furniture arrives.
3. No warranty. Reliable companies provide warranties on their products and will work with you if something goes wrong. Buy from a non-reputable company and there is usually no avenue for recourse.
4. Questionable integrity. Some sellers are more interested in making a quick sale than in providing quality service and support.
5. Difficulty returning items. Watch for policies that make it hard to return an item or obtain a full refund.
6. Deforestation. All sustainable teak must carry an SVLK and FLEGT licence, which guarantees the teak has been harvested from sustainable sources. Buying outside the correct channels may mean you receive inferior furniture that is poorly made, and that may have been harvested through deforestation.
7. No physical premises. A reputable company will usually have a showroom, office, factory or warehouse where its products can be seen. Inviting customers to come and view the furniture is a sign of transparency and confidence — it lets you inspect the quality, ask questions and make an informed decision before buying.
